Why do fans throw away homerun balls?

On July 28, Joe Mauer hit a line drive homerun to the right field seats in Ranger’s Ballpark in Arlington a relatively young man made the catch. As Mauer rounded the bases on the TV broadcast the crowd can be heard cheering. Then the announcers said the ball was coming back to the field.

This is something that has never made much sense to me. Joe Mauer, is likely, if he continues to have the career he’s been having, to one day be in the hall of fame. Why would anyone not want one of his homerun balls? And even if they didn’t want it, why not hold on to it for a few years until he is in the hall of fame and then sell it on Ebay?
